This year we’ve had a record entry for the Classic & Sports Car Club Awards, with more than twice as many
nominations as 12 months ago – 160-plus, in fact, from 66 clubs.
These days, club events often comprise driving and static elements, so several of the nominations have been
entered for both the Best Run or Rally and Best Show or Event.
Now we loved the idea of a gang of Fiat 500s thrumming around Ireland and we would all liked to have followed
the Sunbeam Tiger Owners’ Club over the Cols on its Alpine Tour to Monte-Carlo.
Our winner featured an inspired celebration of a once-maligned British sports car that now has a strong classic
following. The event kicked off at the site of one of the factories where the cars were made, before the 40-plus convoy headed for the locations of the other two premises where they were produced.
En route they picked up several former senior employees who were involved with the car’s development, having
been flagged off in Liverpool by legendary test driver Gordon Birtwistle. And by the time the 109 cars had
assembled at Gaydon, they were met by what’s believed to be the largest gathering of ex-Triumph staff at a club meeting.
