The first TR Drivers Club Adventurous Activity Weekend was held on the weekend of 15th to 17th August. As Skreens Park is only a short distance from our house and the children were raring to go we arrived early on the Friday afternoon and were the first TR Drivers there. Chris Bailey’s scout group were already setting up however and Chris and Roel arrived shortly after we did.  The first thing we did after pitching our tent was to start a fire.  After the children were settled and I’d popped home to collect all the things we’d forgotten we sat by the fire with Chris and Roel and worked out the schedule for the weekend’s activities.

The New TR7 V8 - a stunner!

‘Is it a TR8?’ - Edition 2 -  Now Available

After a good night’s sleep, a hearty breakfast and some more fire stoking we were ready for our first activity – abseiling down the thirty foot tower.  The Brakenburys arrived in their TR6 and Stag just in time for this event.  Phil and James Hoyle and Georgina, James and Vicky Brakenbury all did one descent.  During this event Paul Westerman, Rob Douthwaite and Ian Freeman all from the Essex area arrived and this proved to be the total attendance for the Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon Paul had organised a superb road run complete with two passes under the M11 and a pub stop at the Chequers in Matching Green.  We had a line up of eight cars for this and James was really pleased to be able to lead in Paul’s Green Monster, following them Clare hitched a ride with Rob in his newly acquired (at the National Weekend) V8 DHC, then me and Victoria in my TR7, Roel and one of the Explorer Scouts in his TR8, Chris and Sue in the white FHC, the Brakenburys in the TR6 and Stag with Ian Freeman completing the convoy in his TR8. Everyone enjoyed thirty mile or so route that featured some great driving roads and plenty of Essex’s best scenery.  In the evening we had a superb campfire led by “Elk” and several of the other young leaders.  This was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and was the perfect way to end a great day.

The only TR Drivers who camped were Chris and family, Roel and Family, the Hoyles and the male Brakenburys.  We had a little rain overnight but by the time we got up it had stopped and by the time we were ready to start Sunday’s activities it was starting almost to be summery.  The female Brakenburys were back again in time for the archery.  Georgina did especially well at this managing to get the bull’s-eye.  The archery range was adjacent to a pedal kart track and the younger people kept themselves entertained there whilst awaiting their turn with bows and arrows.  Paul and Rob came back again at this point and Gary Shaw and Greg Collins arrived from Kent in Greg’s green FHC bringing the final total Triumphs attending during the course of the weekend to nine.

The next activity was shooting air rifles, this got quite competitive as we were able to have several attempts to hone our skills. Some of us more successfully than others!  Of the juniors James Brakenbury and James and Victoria Hoyle all took aim. The last activity of the weekend was canoeing, this was deliberately left until last due to the potential for a soaking.  Of the TR Drivers it was only the Hoyles that took part and none of us capsized so that was good. After that it was just a matter of striking the tent and packing everything up.

All in all this was a massively enjoyable weekend with plenty of activities to keep everyone occupied. It was such a shame that it was so poorly attended as such a lot of work went into the planning and running.  I would like to thank everyone who came but I would also especially like to thank Chris “Toffer” Bailey and Roel Van Es for all the hard work put in to make the event happen in the first place. Also I want to thank all those whose efforts made the weekend such an action packed and enjoyable event particularly all of the 1st Steeple Bumpstead Scout Group with a special mention to “Elk”, “Cheese” and “Skip” (Chris Bailey again!) for all their hard work and patience whilst instructing and running the campfire, etc.  Finally I’d like to thank Paul for arranging such a good road run.
