Barney was purchased new by John Sulley, who was stationed in Oklahoma while in the Air Force, in January 1982 from Fretwell’s in Oklahoma City. The coupe was russet brown with a beige corduroy interior. Barney’s color, interior and steering wheel were TR7 items, not the list items for the TR8. This was not that unusual for TRIUMPH at that time…they used whatever items were at hand near the end of a run. In 1984, John was transferred to California and drove the car to Merced. John did significant upgrades to Barney including replacing the distributor; rebuilding the radiator and adding an extra row of coolant tubes; upgraded the springs and suspension bushings with new ones from The Roadster Factory; and installed a Crane ignition as well. In the early 1990’s, John stripped off the old pain and replaced the panel just behind the rear window plus treated all rust prone areas with POR15. Barney was re-sprayed a dark green. John installed an entirely new cloth interior from Rimmers in England.

Barney arrived in Texas in 2002. We purchased the car from John sight unseen and have never regretted it. In fact, Barney is a favorite. He has approximately 35,000 original miles. We had his entire suspension rebuilt and converted the original carburetor to a Weber 4-Barrel on an Edelrock Hi-rise manifold. Barney received a new power steering rack and his original transmission was removed from the car and refurbished. We installed a short-throw shifter from Woody at the Wedge Shop (a real improvement and Bilstein shocks. All mechanical work was done by International Motor Cars in Dallas Texas including the construction to our design of a new air box system. Barney was also the recipient of a beautiful tan leather interior from Rimmers which was professionally installed by Hatfield Restorations in Canton, Texas. He was professionally prepped painted by JKL of Texas with a 2-Pac black paint that really shows his lines off.

Barney has that “wow” factor that is somehow indescribable, yet very evident. Driving Barney is great fun and gives the driver a much different experience from driving the DHC’s (convertibles).
